Digital print of "Xilonen" (Woman of the Tender Corn). Image size is 8.8 x 17.6 on 12x18 paper.
This image depicts Xilonen, the Corn Maiden who represents the tender maize and new offspring.
Within traditional Aztec/Mexica rites of passages, babies are baptized and bathed with tender maize and water to welcome them to the community. Babies are given Nahuatl names and are identified as Indigenous children to this continent.
This specific painting was created to pay homage to one of Veronica's god-daughters who she baptized with maize. Her Mexica birth symbols are inscribed on Xilonen's pedestal, which are Cozcacuauhtli (condor), Miquiztli (death/rejuvenation), and Calli (house).
