I am currently working with another artist to create a beautiful mural at the elementary school where I teach, but we are in need of funding to make this possible! If you'd like to donate please go to http://www.donorschoose.org/veronica.valadez. I'll be sending pictures to all donors throughout the process.
I believe that a mural dedicated to the unique history of our school can become a critical history lesson for present and future students as well as an opportunity for teachers to make connections inside and out of the classroom. This project can become a living monument in which central to the process of preservation will be young people, once again collectively engaged in re-education and preservation as youth ambassadors.
This project has the important value of teaching youth to see themselves as contributors to the preservation of history, culture, public spaces and public dialog that will serve as a teaching tool for future students, parents, and staff. With the outdoor mural paints, paintbrushes, and containers for mixing paint, my students will have all the resources they need to create a beautiful and meaningful mural that celebrates the history and diversity of our school.
Through this mural project, my students will have an opportunity to leave a legacy. I hope to instill in them a deep appreciation of art and to feel confident that they can contribute to their community by creating something beautiful. I want them to experience something they will never forget, something that will impact them for the rest of their lives. They can acquire social skills like having critical discussions with others while working collaboratively to accomplish a common goal.
