Today is the day of Nahui Malinalli (four herb) from approximately 6:45pm on Aug 29 to approximately 6:45pm on Aug 30.

Malinalli (herb) is our umbilical cord and the constant regeneration of nature. All the green plants, trees, etc. are all medicinal if used wisely. Malinalli is symbolic of strong roots, rebirth in nature, resurgence, self-polishing, cycle of renewal, and determination. Malinalli teaches us how to transform by the self-evaluation of our attitudes and actions so that we can understand our behavior and accomplish our goals. It's important that we learn how to become like a plant; self-sufficient and grow/expand when necessary.

The patron of this day is Pantecatl, one of the lords of medicinal herbs and fermented drinks, especially aguamiel, which is taken from the heart of the maguey and becomes fermented pulque. Pantecatl promotes learning of the healing properties of plants.

Malinalli refers to all those things that change and cyclically renew. It is an herb that dries and disappears so as to integrate with the soil and; then, it reappears filling the green in a new cycle.  It is a propitious day for  medicine and healing. Today grants good energy to start treatments and to reach health (Gutierrez). So be sure to drink medicinal herbal teas and eat plenty of plant based foods, for food is medicine.

This day also signifies tenacity, rejuvenation, that which cannot be uprooted forever. Malinalli is a day for persevering against all odds, like the weeds that penetrate, crack, and grow through concrete. It's a good day for creating alliances that will survive the test of time. It is also a good day for those who are suppressed, a bad day for their suppressors (Voorburg).

Have a beautiful tonalli (day) everyone!

Painting With Colors of Diversity

I am currently working with another artist to create a beautiful mural at the elementary school where I teach, but we are in need of funding to make this possible! If you'd like to donate please go to http://www.donorschoose.org/veronica.valadez. I'll be sending pictures to all donors throughout the process.

I believe that a mural dedicated to the unique history of our school can become a critical history lesson for present and future students as well as an opportunity for teachers to make connections inside and out of the classroom. This project can become a living monument in which central to the process of preservation will be young people, once again collectively engaged in re-education and preservation as youth ambassadors.

This project has the important value of teaching youth to see themselves as contributors to the preservation of history, culture, public spaces and public dialog that will serve as a teaching tool for future students, parents, and staff. With the outdoor mural paints, paintbrushes, and containers for mixing paint, my students will have all the resources they need to create a beautiful and meaningful mural that celebrates the history and diversity of our school.

Through this mural project, my students will have an opportunity to leave a legacy. I hope to instill in them a deep appreciation of art and to feel confident that they can contribute to their community by creating something beautiful. I want them to experience something they will never forget, something that will impact them for the rest of their lives. They can acquire social skills like having critical discussions with others while working collaboratively to accomplish a common goal.
