Reviving our Indigenous Heritage

About our name: Simply put "Arte Yolteotl" translates to "art from a heart rooted in the divine". The Aztec/Mexica people believed that, through the arts, one could become a yolteotl, "one with a heart rooted in the divine". It was believed that the only truth on Earth came in the form of art, because an artist must first converse with her heart in order to express herself, creating art that is rooted in truth. So it was every artists' goal to become a yolteotl so that they could express truth through art which can only be done with a heart rooted in the divine. It is Veronica's hope to revive this ancestral concept as she strives to create truth through her artistic and educational endeavors.

Arte Yolteotl’s mission is to help people reconnect with their indigenous heritage by bringing art and education together through products and services that celebrate and bring awareness to Mesoamerican Indigenous cultures.

Veronica Valadez, sole-proprietor and owner of Arte Yolteotl, is a well-known Chicana artist, a Chicana/o Studies instructor, and a traditional Aztec Dancer who has developed an Indigenous-inspired line of products including original paintings, prints, cell-phone cases, puzzles, folk-art, jewelry and skateboard decks.

Veronica’s Indigenous inspired artwork and products help to restore and promote an appreciation for Mesoamerican Indigenous art, history, and culture. The intention is to help descendants of Indigenous peoples reconnect with their cultural roots and pass down the legacy of their Indigenous heritage to future generations.
